Open and Transparent Council
The present council is pre-ocuppied with confidentiality and secrecy. This is not only unnecessary but detrimental to the effective operation of council. I will strive to ensure that the public is fully informed at all times.
Accountability
Our treatment by council clearly shows that Councillors, the General Manager and staff of Wingecarribee Council are not being held accountable for their decisions and actions. I will strive to ensure that they are accountable, and are held responsible.
Fiscal
I believe that council is currently over managed with a staff imbalance in the management area. There are departments, such as Environment and Planning, that can be trimmed significantly. For example much of the tasks now undertaken by Environment and Planning can be done externally, private certification being one. The cost savings can be used to keep rates as low as possible, and have money spent on infrastru. I oppose the building of the Aquatic Centre until a review of the costing is undertaken. Even then I see the centre as a luxury we cannot afford, particularly in the current global economic climate. I also believe the refurbishment of council should be deferred until staffing levels are reviewed. My experience in Executive management means I can critically assess fiscal policy, and strive to ensure 'project Overruns" do not occur in the future.
Policies
"Grass Roots" Council
Lets get back to basics with council, looking after the local community. Leave State matters to our elected state member, same for Federal matters. I believe the present councils preoccupation with 'politics" is not in the best interests of the community.
Representation
Our experience, and the experience of many others we have spoken to, shows that the current nine councillors are not listening to or assisting the public when they encounter an issue with council. I will listen! I will assist! I will treat you with respect!
Environment
I have always been passionate about the environment and the effect that humans are having on the environment. That aside I oppose CSG mining in its present form, The damage to our health being too great. I also believe council should be proactive in minimising all forms of pollution. Current Tip Fees are a disentive to many, and rather than spend large amounts policing illegal dumping we should be lowering tip fees. I believe that the Environment Levy should not be continued indefinitely, rather we should better manage the rates collected and allocate a percentage to the environment.
